Mad Girl Eats Keke’s Breakfast Cafe in Winter Park

wp-1451928864095.jpg

Keke’s Breakfast Cafe, 345 W Fairbanks Ave, Winter Park, FL. Other locations around Orlando, Central and South Florida.

Sunday morning, rainy and cool. I need breakfast and a visit to Keke’s is just the place to fill the bill. Keke’s is a breakfast and lunch only restaurant. They have a large menu and when everything sounds soooo darn good, making a decision seems like an epic chore. Start me off with coffee and let’s go from there. Good coffee, by the way!

Belgian waffles, pimped out waffles, pancakes (dinner plate size), pimped out pancakes, French toast, stuffed French toast, eggs, omelets, ….oy. Everything looked amazing to my starving belly. I’m feeling like something sweet with savory on the side.

I went in hard for a Banana, Nut, & Caramel Waffle. A beautiful masterpiece. Banana and pecans baked inside the waffle, topped with more banana and pecans, then add caramel drizzle, whipped cream, and powdered sugar, Sugar! Wow. Hey, don’t stop there. You MUST add maple syrup to get the entire scrumptious layers of flavor. Yes, do it.

Also ordered were their pancakes. Gigantic pancakes. Eggs and bacon. Former patrons had said, their pancakes were enough for 2 people. I’m saying, they are correct. The taste wasn’t anything special, regular pancake mix flavor. The bacon was excellent and the eggs were fine. If you’re a picky eater, get this basic breakfast. If you’re adventurous, get a souped-up, pimped-out waffle, pancake, or egg dish. They know how to put some bang in your breakfast!

Hours: 7:00am to 2:30pm daily.

Mad Girl Eats Danny’s Donuts in Vista CA!

wpid-2015-08-25-15.44.57.jpg.jpeg

Danny’s Donuts, Donuts and Bagels, 102 Eucalyptus Ave, Vista, CA.

Donuts. Doughnuts. Whichever way you spell it, doughnuts are the end all be all of sweet goodness. A cup of coffee and a doughnut is the most delectable way to start my morning, afternoon, or evening. lol. Seriously! Finding really genuinely calorie-worthy doughnuts is a bit harder. A list comprised by The Daily Meal of “America’s 25 Best Donuts”, is one that brought me to Danny’s! Danny’s was ranked #6. I don’t trust many lists, because I travel and eat all over, but The Daily Meal never steers me wrong, unlike most.

A delightful variety, nice guy at the window, this tiny bakery shop on the corner deserves its place on the Best Of list. The Blueberry cake doughnut is what they are known for, and also the flavor I’m known for, so let’s have at it! I’m on a maple kick, so throw a long john in there too. OOOOMMMMGGGGeeeee, I’m glad I live on the other side of the country because I would not be able to resist these magical pieces of heaven.

I gently crisp outer and oodles of tender, pillow-y insides makes for a perfect textured doughnut. Add the blueberry flavor and glaze and yes, a divine doughnut. The maple long john was just as scrumptious. The amount of sweetness of the maple frosting and generous portion topping on the doughnut, gave me endless happiness.

Oh boy, I want a doughnut right now! Best doughnuts I have found in Southern California, and I’ve tried MANY. They place has been around since 1922, so they must be doing something right!

Hours: Mon – Fri 4:00am – 12:00pm, Sat – Sun 4:00am – 1:00pm.

Mad Girl Eats Little Goat Diner in Chicago!

wpid-photogrid_1440100489942_wm.jpg

Little Goat Diner, 820 W. Randolph St, Chicago, IL. Located in Chicago’s West Loop.

Little Goat Diner is the little sister resto of Stephanie Izard’s mega famed Girl and the Goat restaurant across the street. You walk in and the interior is far from any ‘diner’ I’ve ever seen.Think chic industrial.  Super busy per usual at lunch time, I opt for a sandwich to take out and am directed to the Bakery bar area. After perusing the menu, I decide on a signature goat item, the Goat Almighty. As you can see by the photos above, it was aptly named.

I opened it up and was like….Holy Toledo Batman, this is a gargantuan burger! How do you even begin to eat it?! Let me lay it on you….it consists of a goat burger, braised beef, bbq pork, pickled jalapenos, salsa verde, onion rings, cheddar cheese, and  pickles all inbetween a yummy bun. The only way I could possibly take a bite is by halves…top and bottom. It was fantastic, but the only thing I couldn’t get was a good overall sense of all components in one bite and how they worked together. Other than that, it was good!

Little Goat offers an awesome menu for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. Diner food twisted into something special. My next trip back I want to try a Pork Belly Pancake, a Smoked Pork and Toffee Crunch Shake, a delight from the Bakery, or maybe something coo coo crazy from their Breakfast menu which they serve all day. I love that!

Diner Hours: Sun – Thurs 7:00am – 10:00pm, Fri – Sat 7:00am – 12:00am  Bakery Hours: Everyday 6:00am – 6:00pm.

Mad Girl Eats TooJays Gourmet Deli in Orlando

wpid-photogrid_1433187871415.jpgTooJays Gourmet Deli, The Marketplace at Dr. Phillips, 7600 Dr Phillips Blvd, Orlando, FL. Other Florida locations.

A great place, with a variety of choices. When it gets sweltering hot in Florida, I tend to enjoy cold edibles. The Triple J sandwich pictured above, is one of the tastiest….and pretty sexy lookin’! A grand roll up of corned beef, roast beef, turkey, swiss cheese, and coleslaw with Russian dressing all in-between their bakery-fresh exquisite rye bread.

This sandwich hits the right notes: soft, chewy, crunchy, creamy, rich, sweet, salty, bright, and tangy. A perfect blend of textures and flavors. If anything, get a side of Russian dressing and add more, if you’re saucy and roll that way. I am!

I’ve had their Tongue, which is awesome, breakfast entrees, and their divine bakery. Every visit to TooJays, I come away happy and satisfied. I’ve never had a bad meal! Generous portions at decent prices, and fab staff. Muah!

Mad Girl Eats Black Bean Deli in Orlando

wpid-photogrid_1425425358134_wm.jpg

Black Bean Deli, 1835 East Colonial Dr, Orlando, FL. One location also available in Winter Park, FL.

Florida is so fortunate to have restaurants and food trucks that offer magical fare, especially Cuban. Going in, Black Bean Deli had an award-winning, good reputation and I was intrigued to try them out.

The place was boomin’ busy! The line moved swiftly,  it was clean and inviting, and the staff was welcoming and friendly. You order at the counter first. My order was random, wanting to hit my faves and some the resto is known for. Of course, a Cubano/ Cuban sandwich was needed, along with a Papa Rellenas, and Empanada. I could eat these 3 items everyday. Honest. Ok, I’m not done…Black Beans is a must-try (it’s the name of the joint! Duh!), and their Yuca Fries are crowd-pleaser popular. Orangina to pair it all with, and I’m set.

I’m given my Papa, Empanada, Orangina, and number to put on the table. I’m so happy I don’t have to wait for everything, cuz this girl is mad hungry! OMMMMMGGGeeee the Papa Rellenas were a potato powerhouse. A big ball of Cuban happiness (mashed potatoes with a spoonful of beef, spice, and green olive in the center) breaded and fried. I really wanted another one, but had ordered enough for 3. Ok, Empanada, you’re up next. I chose the Picadillo empanada with its rich ground beef, spice, herb and veggie mixture. The crust was perfectly flaky and tender, and the filling was the right choice, a wonderful burst of flavor. I wanted another of these also. Dang yummy!

Soon the rest of the order was delivered, in cute little aluminum trays. I dove into the award-winning Cuban sandwich. Oh yeah, that’s it. The bread was a perfect balance of crisp and chewy, and not too crusty to rip up the roof of your mouth. I hate that. The meats, cheese, and pickles were all in perfect harmony. I agree, award-winning! Next, the Black Beans. They didn’t disappoint! A generous amount of beans over a small layer of rice. The beans were spiced just right and was a fantastic side dish. When the girl taking the order was asked what I needed that I didn’t order, she recommended the Yuca Fries. They looked delish and tasted even better! Substantial heft to each piece, nicely fried, seasoned with salt, and extraordinary dipped into the accompanied tangy garlic mojo sauce. I have to admit, I dipped my sandwich in the sauce too. Yeow, that was amazing food!!!! I generally have water with my meal, but the Orangina went beautifully. A bit of effervescent orange…realllly good.

In Orlando? Go, go now…well, don’t go on Sunday because they’re closed. Here are their hours for this location. Check their website for Winter Park location hours.

Hours: Mon – Thurs  11:00am – 8:00pm, Fri and Sat 11:00am – 10:00pm. Closed Sundays.

Off street parking and small parking lot. Dining tables inside and out.

Mad Girl Eats the BEST German Chocolate Cake. Ever.

wpid-2014-08-17-13.45.57.jpg.jpeg

C. Adams Bakery, 400 N. Water St, Milwaukee, WI.

Tucked into Milwaukee’s Third Ward Public Market, is C. Adams Bakery. A blissful haven for those of us addicted to sweets. C. Adam’s has an incredible size case, full of homemade delectable baked goods. Cookies, bars, pies, muffins, gooey sweet bread, cakes…I think you get it.

I was so mesmerized, I couldn’t decide which dessert to treat myself to! The smartest decision was to choose the one I rarely see available back home. In my case, it was German Chocolate Cake. In Florida, we can readily find Tres Leches, but hard pressed for German Chocolate anywhere.

Standing four gorgeous dark chocolate layers high, and separated by layers of thick luscious pecan and coconut frosting, this cake was a sight to behold. I had just finished a wonderful late lunch, so I took a slice to go. I made it 3 blocks back to my car, but I couldn’t wait another second to try just a bite. OH EM GEE. One bite, two bites, three bites, four bites…ok, needless to say, the piece of heavenly cake did not make it home.

So rich, so decadent, so freaking unbelievable. Ultra moist and dense cake with fantastic deep chocolate flavor. The frosting was divine, as you could taste all of its finest components of brown sugar, vanilla, pecans, and coconut.

I haven’t gone bonkers over cake in a long time. C. Adams Bakery’s German Chocolate Cake, is one of the best cakes I have ever had.

Stop and get a slice…or a whole cake as soon as you can, it will make you swoon….and super happy. You can thank me later.

Mad Girl Eats Donut King!

wpid-storageemulated0Photo-Grid2014-03-30-14.50.13.jpg.jpg

Donut King,  S. 208 Hwy 27, Minneola, FL.

If you grew up with extraordinary bakeries that made pieces of heaven, called doughnuts, Donut King can’t be missed. In a world of chain supermarket bakeries and institutional tasting doughnut spots, the independent handmade doughnut shop is the king of kings. If you find yourself in Orlando, or traveling on the Florida Turnpike northwest of there, make your way to The Donut King. You will thank me when you do.

Open 24/7, this little shop in the middle of a little country town, offers nothing little. Everything is big, bold, and bodacious and the choices are overwhelming! The front cases house their specialty doughnuts, gigantic and stupendous! The back shelving has their delish regular sized doughnuts we all love. So many sweet delights to choose from, where do you begin?! I start with some of my favorites. Lemon Filled, Maple Frosted, Boston Crème, Jelly Filled. Throw in a few Glazed, Snickers, Strawberry with sprinkles then top it off with an order of beignets! I took a dozen doughnuts to go, but sat and enjoyed beignets and coffee. The beignets were really good, not fluffy and flaky like most, but dense and super heavy. I didn’t care, they tasted fab!

Later, I break open the doughnut box, and dive in. The first thing I noticed was how thick and generous the doughnuts were. I was also happy to have my lemon filled and jelly filled covered in glaze instead of powdered sugar. I don’t know why it’s so freakin’ hard to find glaze coated, but Donut King did it right! Oh mama, the taste was pure homemade, you could really experience it in with the fillings, especially the Boston Crème. Every bite was sensational. Every doughnut was SPECTACULAR! The name says it all, Donut KING!

The doughnuts are the stars, but they also offer a nice menu if you would like a meal. Breakfast foods, New Orleans style dishes, hot dogs, wings, Castle burgers, etc. This space does have a small amount of seating and is open around the clock.

These are the kind of dough delights you dream about and lust after. The doughnuts you crave, and you will. Next time I hope to snag a Red Velvet and a few ultra specialty gems. Welcome to my sugar coma….and doughnut bliss.
