Mad Girl Eats Bern’s Steak House in Tampa

wpid-photogrid_1427921862101_wm.jpgBern’s Steak House, 1208 S. Howard Ave, Tampa, FL.

From the outside, the building that Bern’s is housed in doesn’t look like much more than a stucco-ed warehouse. No windows, no grass, just a big black top driveway with a Valet stand and double doors. Once inside, wow. A two-story lobby welcomes you, drenched in red, velvet, gold, a huge mirror and mega lighting…talk about moody! A line to check-in at the host desk awaits and you better be there by the time your reservation states, or watch out, they don’t play. Reservations* are a must, and all of your party must be present before you are seated. So, basically, get it together!

Seated in one of the lovely well-appointed dining rooms, you can tell this is an upper echelon Steak House. The menu offers whatever your carnivore heart desires, especially their various steaks, thickness, weights, and tips. The most flavorful of steaks for 2 when ordering rare, is the Strip Steak. Their steaks are aged for optimum beefy flavor. Opting for one large steak of 22 oz, which is 2″ thick, cooked to rare with a slightly warm center, then cut in 2 pieces tableside. A brilliant way to give you a perfectly cooked, juicy steak. The steak entrees come with French Onion soup and toasts, House Salad, Baked Potato, 2 vegetables, and fried onions. Foie Gras was ordered to top the steak.

The food came methodically and perfectly timed. The soup was luscious. The house salad was beautiful as it looked like a mini version of a Chopped Salad. Fab! The baked potato was large, and was ordered with all the toppings and a great accompaniment for a hearty steak. The vegetables were fresh and cooked just to done, and fried onions were delish. Excellent sides. The steak. Oh the steak. It was perfection. Beautifully cooked, bounding with flavor, freaking amazing. Moan-worthy. The addition of foie gras on top was out-of-bounds! Rich, smooth, damn scrumptious. It definitely wasn’t needed, but it was wanted 😉

Bern’s is legendary and continually ranks in the top 10 of Best Steak Houses in the Country. They also have one of the largest wine collections anywhere, so I got a fantastic glass of Rose’ to round out my experience. This was worth every penny and I look forward to returning to this absolutely spectacular restaurant. Not to be missed, their Dessert Room upstairs.

MGE: The Harry Waugh Dessert Room in Tampa

wpid-photogrid_1400262496454.jpg

The Harry Waugh Dessert Room, 1208 South Howard Ave, Tampa, FL.  Inside Bern’s Steak House.

Bern’s Steak House is notably one of the best Steakhouses in the nation. On the second floor of Bern’s Steakhouse, is one of the best dessert rooms in the world! If you have a sweet tooth, enjoy a sugar high…or a sugar coma, or always think about dessert before you order dinner, then The Harry Waugh Dessert Room is for you! It is magic.

You enter the steakhouse lobby to a 2 story entry of rich reds, mirrors, and smoldering atmosphere. After checking in (you need a reservation), you are instructed to walk through the restaurant, past the glassed-in kitchen, to the stairway (to heaven)…otherwise known as the steps to the 2nd floor. Greeted at the top, you are whisked away through wooden passage ways, noticing that every table has its own walled cubby. Ah-mazing! As I am seated, I am handed a bible sized dessert menu. Yes, it will blow your mind. Desserts, dessert wines, cheeses, …anything you ‘d wish for. On the wall is a phone with a direct line to the wait staff, and your own selection of music. Fabulous!

Perusing this menu was so entertaining. I didn’t really have to hem and haw over anything, I knew going in what I wanted. Chocolate all the way, baby! I grew up with chocolate malted, not Hershey syrup, but the jar of powdered chocolate malt for milk. Bringing back sweet childhood memories, I ordered the mega Malted Chocolate Cake. It wasn’t just cake. It also came with a mini chocolate malt, and a malted chocolate mousse.  Oh Mama….this was tremendous. The cake…made with Valrhona chocolate crème, dense chocolate cake, and malted marshmallow crème icing. Hold me. The malted chocolate mousse was phenomenal, but the mini chocolate malt was freaking unbelievable! I wanted more! Everything was garnished with the tiniest malted milk balls I have ever seen….and oh so wondrous. This dessert was a chocolate lovers dream.

Also ordered was the Vintage Chocolate Lush Sundae. A flourless chocolate lush cake, topped with their dreamy homemade ice cream,  fresh whipped cream, chocolate shavings, a strawberry and a side of hot fudge. What more could you want?! Dense, extremely chocolately, and fantabulous! Their dessert menu is overwhelming because everything looks like you want to dive into it ASAP.

Whatever your after dinner treat looks like, you can definitely find something at the Harry Waugh Dessert Room that will make you do cartwheels.

Mad Girl Eats Harold Seltzer’s Steakhouse

Harold Seltzer’s Steakhouse, 3500 Tyrone Blvd N, St Petersburg, FL.

Walking into Harold Seltzer’s Steakhouse, you know you’re in for a great meal. The sights, scents, and sounds strike the right notes for a successful experience. An upscale, warm and woody interior with lots of wine bottles and elegant décor, the delightful scent of garlic and yeast rolls baking, and the server saying it’s Prime Rib special day AND Happy Hour. What more could you want?!

There was no hemming and hawing. I want a one pound Prime Rib, rare with creamy horseradish sauce on the side, Cesar’s salad, garlic mashed, and the House Merlot. Upon ordering, the server placed a small vessel of homemade garlic croutons on the table. I munch a few before my salad arrives. Yummy! Salads are brought and no skimping on anything! Heavy duty on all ingredients, including dressing. I have no problem with that, but if you do, ask for it on the side. The yeast dinner rolls are delish and a nice throwback to when you’d receive a bread basket at the table. Rarely do you get that anymore. The salad and dinner roll were a nice start. I stopped short of finishing my salad to prepare for the main event!

Da da da dah! The Prime Rib has arrived. Thick, pink, moist, succulent…a thing of beauty. Au jus and creamy horseradish are waiting for a piece of meat to take a dip and just then it does. OMGGGGG….the Prime Rib is perfect and somehow even better skinny dipping in the au jus, then dunked in the horseradish sauce. Take a sip of the Merlot and there is a cacophony of righteousness in my mouth! What a major fab pairing! Their house Merlot is an excellent choice with this entrée. I love potatoes of any sort, but rarely eat them at home, only when I’m out. The homemade garlic mashed was a treat! Just the right amount of creaminess and garlic. Sensational!

If you’re in the Tampa area, a happy carnivore, and adore Prime Rib, make your way over to St Petersburg to Harold Seltzer’s Steakhouse. You will leave very satisfied and with a gigantic grin. Psst….grab some of their candy coated mints before you walk out the door. Refreshing!

Hours: Mon-Thurs 12pm – 10pm, Fri and Sat 12pm – 10:30pm, Sun 12pm – 9pm. Happy Hour: Noon to 6pm and 8pm to close. Basically, there are 2 hours you can’t get ‘happy’. Ha!
